About Us

KENAXIS is a true labor of love, a project sprung from necessity and maintained by its popular reception in the worlds of live performance, sound design, and modern music composition.

Stefan Smulovitz began creating Kenaxis in 1999 when he felt his live performances were being constrained by the limits of prevalent software at the time. Known for his “quicksilver ability to morph and manipulate sound via digital technology,” Smulovitz designed Kenaxis to transform the laptop into a bona fide live instrument. Commissioned for everything from the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra to a recent genre-bending collaboration with Hadley+Maxwell, Smulovitz has won prestigious awards and commissions, sold out festival appearances, and collaborated with some of the best and brightest forces of improvisation worldwide. Viviane Houle is the Kenaxis administrator, assistant, and muse. An accomplished vocalist, Viviane also collaborates and performs regularly with Smulovitz and Kenaxis. Visit vivianehoule.ca.
